Historic Homes & Gardens Tour 2015
NUMU (formerly Museums of Los Gatos) has moved the Historic Homes Tour to the spring. This year's tour will feature homes as well as gardens. The 2015 tour features four houses including a 1908 Bungalow, 1909 Craftsman, 1895 Folk Victorian, 1870 Richardson Victorian and an acre-sized outdoor collection of household items, classic cars and farm tools that illustrate the architectural roots of Los Gatos.
The Historic and National Landmark property, Yung See San Fong, the home built by Ruth Comfort Mitchell and her husband former state senator Sanborn Young in the foothills above Los Gatos will be featured on this year’s Historic Homes Tour. Completed in 1917, the Asian-inspired home with pagoda roof styling and ornate carvings incorporates a mix of materials and commands magnificent views of the Santa Clara Valley from each of its four stories. This rare treasure is not to be missed.
Ruth Comfort Mitchell (1882 - 1954), author and playwright, lived in the house her entire married life and was an engaged member of the Los Gatos community. Mitchell wrote scripts and performed in the 1929, 1930 and 1937 Los Gatos pageants, was a member of the Los Gatos History Club (founded in 1897), and in 1929 was a founding member of the Los Gatos Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; its first meeting was held in this home.
In addition to the treasure trove of character-filled historic homes, displays of classic cars, Plein Air artists and musicians will be on every property. The tour goes to four historic areas of Los Gatos and carpooling is recommended as parking may be challenging in some locations.
