NUMU is excited to partner with the Vivace Youth Chorus of San Jose to bring music to the museum and Los Gatos families. This Family Musical Workshop will be led by Katerine Carmona Arbelaz and feature fun and engaging folk songs with rhythm and movement activities inspired by NUMU’s current exhibition RETAZOS featuring the work of Artist in Residence Alexander Hernandez.

Tickets: $15 per child, $10 for accompanying adult
*Ticket includes admission to the museum for the day.
Registration is open to ages pre-school - 3rd grade level
*Day-of registration will be accepted at the door as space permits.
*All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
*Masks required for all participants. Proof of vaccination required for participants over 5 years old.

About the Instructor: Katerine Carmona Arbelaez
Katerine Carmona Arbelaez is an accomplished bilingual music educator and clarinetist with experience teaching music to children between 6 months and 10 years old. She has participated as a clarinetist in multiple symphonic bands, including The Alexandria Symphonic Band, The San Ramon Symphonic Band, and the DVC Symphonic Band.
Katerine is from Cartago, Colombia, and has a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the Technological University of Pereira. While in Colombia, she taught music to children of all ages. Katerine earned a master’s degree in music education with Kodály emphasis at Holy Names University in Oakland, California.
She is a teaching artist at Cantare con Vivo, where she teaches music from TK to 2nd grade and conducts the choir, Las Estrellitas de Melrose.
About Vivace Youth Chorus
All voices are welcome at Vivace Youth Chorus, an engaging, inclusive, high-quality music education program for youth, ages 6-18 in the Silicon Valley. Under the direction of Artistic Director Kristina Nakagawa, instruction begins with singing, movement, and games, followed up with reading music, writing, and theory. This approach allows students to naturally progress from our introductory Training Choirs to our more advanced Performing Ensembles. Rooted in the Kodály methodology, our program fosters creative development, encourages collaboration with peers, and instills a life-long love of music and the arts. Vivace Youth Chorus comprises eight choirs, with additional music enrichment opportunities and special programming. Vivace Youth Chorus is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 charitable organization, based in Willow Glen, San Jose.
In accordance with the New Museum Los Gatos, all participants in this class must have proof of up-to-date* Covid vaccination and wear masks while onsite.
Do not attend class if you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact or tested positive within the past 10 days.

Build, paint, and assemble your own hanging fish sculpture with Jess Gilliam in this two-day, creatively open-ended paper maché workshop at NUMU!.
On day one, you will be guided through the structure, shaping, and assembly of your paper maché sculpture. Your piece will dry overnight at NUMU.
On day two, you will paint and walk away with a finished piece that feels both sculptural and playful.
Celebrate our nation’s 250th Sesquicentennial by participating in our Handwriting the Constitution community art project. Participants will transcribe portions of the U.S. Constitution on large foamcore whiteboards using black felt-tip markers.
Join us for a talk by eminent Los Gatos Physician and art collector, Dr. Josel Cabaccan.
Dr. Cabaccan serves on the acquisitions committee of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, France. Pieces from his own collection have been featured in the Venice Biennale 2022 and 2024, Louisiana Museum 2018-2019 and 2023, Musee d' Art Moderne de Paris 2023 - 2024, Centre d'Art La Malmaison de Cannes 2020, and published in Yayoi Kusama "Everyday I Pray for Love" and the upcoming "Anthology of drawings by Luc Tuymans" 2026. He frequently travels to art fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze and international and local art exhibitions, which he highlights on his Instagram @an_art_throb.
Interested in trying figure drawing for the first time or brushing up on your skills? Join us at NUMU for a self-guided figure drawing session! The session will take place in our Flick Drawing Studio with a live model, easels, newsprint paper, and pencils. You are welcome to bring additional materials.
Hoo’s ready for September’s monthly craft? Visitors can use upcycled cardboard, paper, and more to make their own horned owl, a popular sight to see as Los Gatos enters fall. If you need more inspiration, you can check out our collection of taxidermied owls on display in the Los Gatos History Project and Collections Lab. It’s a hoot!

Did you know Yehudi Menuhin, the world-renowned violinist, lived in Los Gatos? Join us for a talk by musician Robert Huguenor, as we learn about Menuhin's life and music.
Learn how to capture the magical light of the Central Coast in oils with local landscape painter, Victoria Galitzine. This class will cover the basics of solvent-free oil painting utilizing the expressive “alla prima” (wet-on-wet) technique. Victoria will guide you step-by-step on how to layer oils using quick, intuitive brushwork. All ability levels are welcome. You will leave with your very own impressionist-style oil seascape. All materials provided.

Join us at NUMU to celebrate the opening of Community Ignition, a group exhibition showcasing how art is created in the Disability Arts Community: in communities, through conversation and support, through interdependence, and within systems of care. The concept of interdependence, or mutual reliance, celebrates asking for assistance and honors the collaboration that is often present in artistic practice. NUMU provides a venue for conversation and learning to shift perspectives and develop awareness of disability culture and artists with disabilities.

New Museum Los Gatos welcomes the South Bay community to celebrate Reawakening: Muwekma Ohlone Culture and Connection in Pursuit of Recognition and Reawakening: Reciprocity of Land, Sea, and the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe at our Community Day on November 7th. Brownies will explore NUMU’s galleries with a museum professional, experiment with line-making, printmaking techniques, and create their own painted portraits. Each Girl Scout will also design and build a custom frame to display their artwork. This engaging program is a fun experience you won’t want to miss!

Learn about the art of bookmaking at NUMU! We will explore how books are made and try a variety of bookmaking techniques for ourselves. Girl Scout Cadettes will fold, stitch, staple, and experiment with bookmaking tools to make fun and functional books. We will use a variety of interesting papers and design our own marbled paper using shaving cream!
