Join NUMU this March to commemorate Irish-American Heritage Month through the cultural art of Celtic knots. The diversity of Celtic knots throughout woven, rock-carved, painted, and printed works is a timeless and ongoing practice. Visitors will be able to use pipe cleaners to make three types of Celtic knots: the triquesta, heart, and dara knots.
Over 100 years ago, multi-millionaire Andrew Carnegie built almost 2000 libraries across the U.S., including the one that used to stand in Los Gatos! Join us as we learn what happened to this vanished landmark. Featuring special guest, Shawnte Santos, from the Los Gatos Library!
Ben Cunningham-Summerfield (Mountain Maidu of Northern California and Turtle Mountain Chippewa of the Great Lakes Region) and his wife, Kimberly (Tsalagi [Cherokee] and culturally-adopted Mewuk), are indigenous educators and cultural demonstrators. They will be spending time with NUMU’s collections and curatorial team, delving into the indigenous belongings in the museum’s collection and educating staff about the materials, source communities, and significance of each piece.
Celebrate Earth Day and the value of re-use while exploring creativity in our Makerspace. You are invited to drop-in and create your own cork doll by using reclaimed wine corks, fabric scraps, yarn and markers to make a figure. This historic craft is rooted in the Victorian era when hobbyists sought ways to repurpose cork bark. One way was creating these playful dolls from the high-quality wine cork for gifts or collectables.
Spend an afternoon at NUMU learning how to make a stitched mixed media art piece that chronicles a memory or life event with our exhibiting artist, Susan Hyde Greene. In this 3-hour workshop, you will learn how to use photographic images, paper, and thread to create pieced, stitched, cut-apart, and reassembled artworks relaying stories of personal memory and/or meaningful life events.
Learn about the art of bookmaking at NUMU! We will explore how books are made and try a variety of bookmaking techniques for ourselves. Girl Scout Cadettes will fold, stitch, staple, and experiment with bookmaking tools to make fun and functional books. We will use a variety of interesting papers and design our own marbled paper using shaving cream!

Grab a needle and yarn for the May monthly craft, Photo-Stitching! Using black and white copies of photographs from our collection, you are invited to get creative and embellish with colorful yarn and simple stitches. While here, check out the new exhibition Salon Jane: Resonance, and see the conversations shared between the photographers’ works on display.

In this program, Girl Scout Juniors will earn their Art and Design Badge by creating a Tiny Art Show. We will explore NUMU’s galleries looking for art and design, paint a tiny canvas, experiment with color saturation, sculpt tiny pottery from clay, and design our own tiny art show with pedestals and frames. This tiny art and design experience will be big fun!
Long known as “the Valley of Heart’s Delight”, Santa Clara Valley was the world’s largest producer of fruit, with acres of farmland providing a bounty of produce in an ideal climate. This decade saw a huge increase in population that came about for several reasons, including the growing technology industry that developed into what we now know as Silicon Valley. Learn more about Los Gatos in the 1960s with Amy Long, curator of our current exhibition, I Know A Place. Amy will also share her experiences living in Los Gatos in the 60s. We'd love to hear your stories, too!
This June, NUMU is celebrating Pride month with the return of a crowd favorite craft: Pride keychains! Step into our Lounge and decorate a keychain with lanyard cord and pony beads to match one of many Pride flags in the LGBTQ+ community, and learn the importance of the colors used in each of the flags.

New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) is excited to partner with LGS Recreation to deliver this week-long camp for young artists to create a unique artwork that captures their perspective on the history and charm of Los Gatos. Participants will learn art techniques, explore the museum’s art & history exhibitions, walk the Los Gatos Creek trail, learn about local flora and fauna, visit local Los Gatos historic landmarks, and even meet some key town officials. Each day we’ll focus on a new topic and by the end of the week students will have completed a one-of-a-kind painting reflecting the theme “Capturing Life in Los Gatos.” The camp concludes with a mini-art show where campers proudly display their work for family and friends. This is a highly engaging interactive art and history experience that you don’t want to miss.

Ming Quong, a local historic school for Chinese girls, was an iconic part of Los Gatos history, and we are honored to have Janet Chang, a former resident of Ming Quong, join us to share her memories.
