About the ArtNow 2024 Selection Process

April 18, 2024 Jamie Donofrio

What a year! We were blown away by the thoughtfulness of submissions across the board, and our team was faced with the difficult task of narrowing down the hundreds of submissions we received to the small percentage of pieces that can physically fit in our gallery. This year, we received 810+ submissions from 45 high schools across Santa Clara County and will be exhibiting the work of 82 student artists from 26 high schools.

How are works selected?

Our selection committee (this year comprised of Director of Exhibitions + Collections Cristiano Colantoni, Curator Allison Railo, Curatorial and Programs Associate Michèle Jubilee, and Community Representative and MACLA Visual Arts Curator Alyssarhaye Graciano) each votes on works and the highest scoring pieces are selected for the show. We do this while keeping in mind:

  • Our jurying criteria, which includes:

    • Significant and thoughtful investigation of the theme.

    • Imaginative communication of ideas.

    • Meaningful use of materials.

    • Demonstrates technical skill and artistic merit.

    • Artist statement is well articulated.

  • An appropriate balance of work in each of our 8 medium categories

  • A mindfulness in representation from students across the county

Submission Statistics

  • 10% of submissions were accepted into the show.

  • Our most popular medium category was Drawing, with 252 works submitted and our least popular was Video/Animation with 12.

  • The school with the most submissions was Los Altos High School with 220 submitting students! Wow!

  • 50% of the accepted submissions were by seniors. 3 talented freshmen will be exhibiting in ArtNow 2024.

  • 90% of submitting students learned about ArtNow through their high school teachers. Thank you, teachers!

  • 60% of students accepted this year had never submitted before. 20% of students accepted this year had previously submitted and were not accepted.

  • 38% of submitting students used the Educational Toolkit. 93% of them found it helpful.

  • When the Selection Committee was asked what common mistakes they saw in entries, they said files weren't properly named, artist statements were rushed, incomplete descriptions of materials, and medium miscategorization.

  • ArtNow 2024: In Transition will be on view from March 22 to June 30, 2024 at NUMU and admission for youth, 18 and under, is 100% free year-round.

Meet our 2024 Community Representative

Every year, NUMU selects a community representative, a working artist or a museum professional, to join the NUMU team in jurying submissions. in 2024, that community representative was Alyssarhaye Graciano, a trilingual fiber artist. Once in the tech industry as a linguistic specialist, she left her day job to pursue a creative career. While she mainly knits and crochets, painting, sewing, macramé, and weaving are also part of her arts practice. Her upcoming solo show at Art Ark will feature gouache and wool paintings. Today she works as a Visual Arts Curator at MACLA in San Jose, CA while continuing her own arts practice through pattern design, workshops, and exhibitions.

“Being a juror for this year's ArtNow exhibition at NUMU was a true delight. The exhibition will feature fantastic works by the next generation of contemporary artists and I'm honored to have been witness to it all.”
