Uncovering the Works of Frank Delos Wolfe: Prairie School Architecture Close to Home with Krista Van Laan

December 10, 2015 | 7pm - 8pm |

FREE with admission | FREE for members

In 1912, San Jose architect Frank Delos Wolfe, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, applied the architectural style of the Midwestern Prairie movement to the California bungalow. The result was something unique to Northern California, an ornate and strikingly modern type of building that suited the California lifestyle and appealed to those who wanted something decidedly different. Most of these beautiful Prairie-style homes, schools, and apartments still exist in Santa Clara County.

Krista Van Laan will draw from her book Frank Delos Wolfe: California Prairie Architecture, which showcases more than 40 of Wolfe's Prairie-style buildings and tells the stories of their fascinating owners, including Lydia and J. Walter Crider of Los Gatos. Wolfe's clients were the pioneers that helped build and influence Santa Clara County in the booming 1910s, and Frank Wolfe was the architect who was able to give them something special. Wolfe was one of the most prolific architects of all time, and Van Laan will touch on the various styles he popularized during his 35-year career, giving special attention to the many Wolfe buildings in Los Gatos.

Playhouse Build with Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley

Saturday, September 19, 2015 | 10:30am - 4pm

NUMU is collaborating with Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley to host a playhouse build this coming September. The Playhouse Program provides underprivileged children with a place of their own. Volunteers build a fully functional playhouse, where they construct the walls, door, windows, trim, the roof, and paint the structure. The playhouses are then donated to community charities that serve children, or directly to the families themselves. NUMU will have 10-15 volunteers from the local high schools and our local National Charity League chapter building each playhouse under Habitat for Humanity's direction and supervision.

This Playhouse Build was made possible by the contributions of our generous sponsor:

Jeff Barnett of Alain Pinel Realtors Los Gatos

More information on their Playhouse Project is available at: http://www.habitatebsv.org/cwp/playhouse-program.

art:inFocus Speaker Series | "Provenance: Possessing Art" by Lynn Federle Orr

Provenance traces the history of an artwork’s travels from artist’s studio through the hands of subsequent owners. Museum curators, collectors, dealers, art and cultural historians, attorneys–and even some novelists—track the fascinating story of ‘how things got where.’

Museum professional Dr. Lynn Federle Orr shares insights about the role of Provenance in the Art World. At times straightforward, at others tinged with the drama of war or the hype of celebrity, the study of art ownership more importantly opens a window onto larger social issues: shifting fashions in style, political power struggles, cultural identity, and the meaning and purpose of museums themselves. From conventional inheritance, to the excitement of the saleroom, to WWII Repatriations, to the vexing questions of antiquities, Dr. Orr explores the facts, controversies, and ethics in the world of Provenance.

As Curator-in-Charge of European Art, Lynn Orr oversaw the Legion of Honor’s permanent collection and galleries. Dr. Orr also served on the NEA’s Domestic Indemnification Program advisory panel. With a University of California Ph.D., she has lectured and published widely on the 17th and 19th centuries. Recent exhibitions include ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis (2013); The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde (2012); and back-to-back exhibitions from the Musée d’Orsay (2010-11).  In 2013-14, she taught at Stanford University (Continuing Studies Program), the University of San Francisco (Department of Art and Architecture), and University of California, Santa Cruz (Department of History of Art and Visual Culture).

Admission: $15 for non-members, $10 for members, and Free for members at the $500 level and above. Talk begins at 7:00pm.

Introduction to Screen Printing with Yoni Asega

Saturday, September 12, 2015 | 1-3pm | $20 materials fee

This workshop will explore the basics of screen printing,  a process derived from stencil printing. We will go over screen printing basics, history, screen printed monotypes and will cover two stencil making methods: photo emulsion and hand cut stencil.

If you choose to do a hand cut stencil it would be best to have your design cut out and ready to print in order to take full advantage of printing time. Best materials for hand cut stencils are: contact paper, thin plastic transparency paper, wax paper, or laminate copy paper. Alternatively, if you want to print a larger edition (10+ prints of the same image) I can burn your image on a screen using photo emulsion for an additional $20 fee. Files should be emailed to asega.jonathan@gmail.com no later than August 29th.  Acceptable files are .tiff , .Ai or .PSD.  If you don’t want to make a design but would still like to take the class there will be a few designs that you can choose from.

Water based inks will be provided in this workshop as well as newsprint for everyone to print on. You can also bring your own materials such as t-shirts, higher quality paper, etc. This course is suitable for beginners and for those looking for a refresher. If you have any questions, please contact us at 408.354.2646 or at education@numulosgatos.com. Cost for this workshop: $20 materials fee.

A Conversation with Leonardo Cuervo, exhibiting artist: Eye for Sound: See Music, Hear Art

Free with admission!

Leonardo Cuervo is a Fantastic Realism painter interested in exploring the human figure and bringing out its unsettling side. As reflected in his 2014 solo show In Fabula at the Garboushian Gallery in Los Angeles, Cuervo's work is 'infused with all things fantastical and esoteric, leaving the reality of society and exploring the unreal world in our imagination'. He started as an engraving student at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, in Havana, Cuba, but was immediately drawn to traditional oil painting techniques.

In Havana, Cuervo presented solo shows in prestigious institutions like the Gallery Palace of Limbillo, the Wallonia Cultural Center, both in Havana Historical Center, and the Gallery Pequeno Espacio of the National Council of VIsual Arts and participated in collective exhibitions at institutions like the Center for the Development of Visual Arts, Havana, Cuba, and the Blue Circle Gallery, Chicago, USA.

His early work, influenced by the culture developed during the XIV and XVII centuries, led him to present solo exhibitions at the Contrast-Gallery and the Galerie Yannick David, in Brussels, Belgium. Cuervo's origins as engraver motivated him to also embrace pencil drawing as a complete form of expression. His graphite work was recently selected for the 2014 collective show PaperWorks II at the Upstream Gallery in Hasting-on-Hudson, New York. Cuervo lives and paints in California since 2012.

"Come Take a Ride on the Hindenburg" presented by Cheryl Ganz, Curator Emeritus of The Smithsonian Philately Museum

On May 6, 1937, Hindenburg burst into flames. The world’s largest zeppelin was totally destroyed in only thirty-four seconds. The iconic footage of the first major air disaster caught on film is seared into our memories along with Herb Morison’s famous words “Oh the Humanity.” But Hindenburg’s legacy is more than its disastrous end. Learn about life aboard the famous zeppelin and imagine yourself enjoying a transatlantic voyage during the heyday of airship travel.

Cheryl R. Ganz is a Smithsonian Institution Curator Emerita following her retirement as the Chief Curator of Philately at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum and as lead curator of the William H. Gross Stamp Gallery, the world's largest postage stamp gallery. She currently serves on the USPS Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee, the committee that selects subjects and approves designs for U.S. postage stamps. She specializes in zeppelin memorabilia and mail worldwide, especially from U.S. airships, the 1933 Graf Zeppelin Chicago flight, and Hindenburg. Ganz earned a PhD in U.S. history from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her publications include Pots of Promise: Mexicans and Pottery at Hull-House, 1920-40; The 1933 Chicago World's Fair: A Century of Progress; Delivering Hope: FDR & Stamps of the Great Depression; Fire & Ice: Hindenburg and Titanic; Pacific Exchange: China & U.S. Mail; and Every Stamp Tells a Story: The National Philatelic Collection.

Admission is $15.00 for nonmembers, $10.00 for members. Talk begins at 2:00pm.
